You all did a great job at the noontime concert today! We had a bit of trouble with the beginning of "Music of the Night", but seeing as we only had one rehearsal on that piece, I thought you pulled it off well.

Special thanks to Nick for saving me and the band on the pickup in Jubilance!

Haha.
Yeah, all went well :]
It sounded a lot quieter outside than in the band room.
No echo?

Correct. Our band room is so small that even the softest of sounds produces a moderate volume level due to the close proximity of walls, ceiling and floor for the sound to bounce off of.

You know, we looked into getting a 'real' gong, but figured we needed the chimes first.
A larger gong would have sounded louder (and much better).

Do percussion instruments really cost that much?
I mean, seriously!
That must be some pretty darn expensive metal! xD

Yes, the one we were looking at (28" Paiste plus stand - same as Whitney H.S. that we used for Honor Band) was about $800.

Hi D Kim

That's a lot of money! I'm trying to save up money for a Yamaha sax by next year. Do you recommend a specific saxophone, Mr. Mitts?

The metal's probably cheap :P, just the crafting and "perfectness" it has to reach so that it'll be able to generate the sounds we want.

I've been playing timpanis for the past couple of years, so I only know their price range. But I do believe snare and bass drums are in the hundreds (300+ I think.)

Oh and the good timpani sets (best I've used so far are from Yamaha, the ones at Disneyland and another at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center) are $10,000 for a set of 4 :D.

Whos Twangsta?!?

'Tis Michael Chou! :]
Right?
I'm right, right? xD

Anyway, I think I'm going to buy a new clarinet myself.
I'm not planning to buy one as expensive as a Yamaha.
So are there any other brands that are recommended?
Mr. Moreno suggested that I should get a new mouthpiece.
But I can't remember what he told me.
All I can recall is that it started with an "M".
Haha.
So, if you have any recommendations,
please tell me :]
Thanks.

Whos Twangsta?!?

And as usual people misspell my gaming name, or pronounce it wrong :P.

Jessica's right, it's Michael Chou. You could have just clicked on my profile and checked my real name .

And sorry Jessica you'd have to wait on Mr. Mitt's recommendation for that haha.

Well, when asked, I always recommend students buy the best instrument possible. Not sure what your budget is, but the best you can get right now is probably the Yamaha YAS-82Z (assuming you mean alto sax).

Click HERE (http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/ContentDetail/ModelSeriesDetail/0,,CNTID%25253D15272%252526CTID%25253D240300,00.ht ml) to check it out.
Click HERE (http://www.wwbw.com/Search/Default.aspx?N=61&Ntt=Yamaha+YAS-82Z) to see a price on it from the Woodwind/Brasswind.

The YAS-82Z is a professional model instrument. You could go a step lower and look at the Yamaha YAS-62II (as seen HERE (http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/ContentDetail/ModelSeriesDetail/0,,CNTID%25253D15271%252526CTID%25253D240300%25252 6CNTYP%25253DPRODUCT,00.html) ).

Hope that helps...

Mr. Mitts

Ohhh, thank you! :D It looks like I have to wait a bit though...my parents don't seem to help me with this budget problem. :( I can't wait until I get a nice new saxophone that has a good tone.

Actually, your mouthpiece, reed and embouchure has more to do with your sound than your instrument. Yes, having a pro model horn will help, but the correct embouchure (helped with long tone studies), mouthpiece (you just got a good one) and reed combination (what brand and strength are you currently using?) will allow you to sound very good indeed!

I'm using Rico Royal size 3. I remember Edward H. recommending me to get Vandoren next time.

jessicaWHOO

But don't you percussionists always break the heads of your sticks?
& not to mention, they get all scratched up & stuff x]

twangansta
03-20-2007, 09:03 PM
Haha yeah that's true too. My marching sticks, man after one parade the white paint gets shaved off.

But concert sticks last quite some time (well cause I haven't played snare in a while :().

I gave Nick a pair of drum sticks for Christmas;
Let us predict,
how long do you think they'll last? xD

twangansta

He probably didn't use them yet cause he's too busy spinning!

I haven't seen Nick play with sticks yet though, only his crazy beating on the bass drum :p.

Yes, I think you will get better consistency with Vandorens. Give 'em a shot and see what you think.
